FIVTH SKIN - PRODUCT REVIEWS
I started the skincare line after I had my child. Postpartum, my skin broke out, and the blemishes left me with stubborn dark marks. I was advised to use a glycolic acid peel to remove them. Without doing any research, I bought a 30% glycolic peel. While it did remove the marks, it also left me with a significant patch of melasma.
In my search for a product to help fade the melasma, one active ingredient kept popping up: Mandelic Acid. I learned that skin of color should avoid high percentages of glycolic acid and instead use mandelic or malic acid. I also discovered that many people are unaware of how certain active ingredients can harm our skin if the potency is too high; for example, Niacinamide can cause irritation if the percentage is excessive.
Unable to find Mandelic Acid products on the market, I decided to create my own. I found a cosmetic formulator to assist me with the formulation. My goal was to create products that are gentle yet effective. We offer a mandelic acid exfoliator for use once a week and a daily serum. The main concern we address is hyperpigmentation, and we are currently developing a line for mild acne.
The Hyper-pigmentation Inhibitor is R300, and the Leave-On Exfoliator is R400. As a small business without our own lab, our products are made in Cape Town by the formulator, who also bottles them. My dream is to get the products into shops. Currently, we sell at markets and through social media, and most of our customers come from referrals and word of mouth.
Leave on Exfoliator - R400
Review
After incorporating this leave-on exfoliator serum into my routine, I’ve noticed a significant difference in the clarity and texture of my skin. It’s been a game-changer for my pigmentation concerns, gently resurfacing my skin while fading discolouration. What I love most is how lightweight and non-irritating it is, making it ideal for everyday use, even on sensitive skin. Over time, I’ve seen my skin become noticeably brighter and firmer, with a smoother, more even tone. It has also helped tackle signs of ageing and blemishes, giving my complexion a fresh, renewed glow. This serum has easily become an essential in my skincare collection, delivering consistent results without being harsh.
HyperPigmentation Inhibitor - R300
Review
After using the Hyper-pigmentation Inhibitor for a few weeks, I’ve noticed a remarkable improvement in the overall evenness of my skin. Dark marks that once seemed stubborn are now visibly lighter, and my complexion looks much more balanced. The combination of Glutathione, Kojic Acid, Arbutin, and Tranexamic Acid has been incredibly effective in fading discolouration while preventing new spots from forming. What really stood out for me is how soothing the formula is—it doesn’t cause any irritation, even on my sensitive skin. The product not only targets pigmentation but also leaves my skin feeling calm and refreshed. This serum has become a true essential in my routine, and the consistent, visible results have made it a firm favourite for tackling hyper-pigmentation.
