A Glimpse into Veruska Uys's Journey

Interview with Veruska Uys

Please tell us more about yourself.

I'm Veruska Uys, a 23-year-old from Pretoria, the beautiful Jacaranda city. I am a proud student at the University of Pretoria, where I am currently pursuing my honors degree in criminology. I obtained my undergraduate degree on April 24, 2023. I am a compassionate, strong, and humble individual with a deep determination to succeed and prosper. I am driven by passion and approach each challenge as an opportunity for growth.

What are your hobbies or interests outside of modeling?

I enjoy spending quality time with my friends and family because life is unpredictable, and tomorrow is not promised. I consider myself an adrenaline junkie, always eager to try something new and extreme. Additionally, being outdoors brings me peace and serves as a temporary escape from reality. Activities like fishing and camping bring a big smile to my face. I get a kick out of telling people I love fishing. The look on their faces is priceless! They think pageant girls only know how to strut in heels, not wade in water. But getting my hands dirty? That's the best part!

Are you currently working on any projects?

Yes, I have two non-profit community projects. The first is Veruska's Winter Feet Project, where I collect school shoes and socks for children in need, ensuring they don't have to walk barefoot through the winter months. The second is the Prom Queen Foundation, where I sponsor an evening gown and do makeup for a girl attending her matric farewell dance. It's a joy to see their faces light up and know I've made a difference, even if it’s small.

What do you think is the most important quality of a model and why?

Embrace your uniqueness because comparison is the thief of joy!

What is one professional goal you have for yourself?

One professional goal I have for myself is to become a successful fashion model. I’ve always been passionate about fashion shows and the energy they bring.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

Predicting the future can be challenging, especially when life is full of unexpected twists and turns. I like to stay open to whatever comes my way and focus on taking things one step at a time. In the next five years, I hope to establish myself as a criminologist, using my expertise to contribute positively to society. My goal is to keep learning, growing, and adapting to new experiences and challenges. Ultimately, I embrace the beauty of life's unpredictability and strive to go with the flow. I believe these are the things that shape us into the people we are meant to become.

You have entered many competitions; please tell us more about your recent wins.

What do you like most about modeling?

What I like most about modeling is the incredible adrenaline rush I get when I'm on stage. There's nothing quite like the energy of the moment—the lights, the music, and the audience's anticipation all combine to create an exhilarating experience.

Are you currently with an agency? If so, please tell us more.

Yes, I am currently with Vogue Catwalk Models. I've been working with Valerie Begbie for over 10 years, and I couldn't ask for a better experience. Valerie is truly the best—she goes above and beyond to support her models. She's not just a teacher; she's like a motherly figure to all of us. Her guidance and care have been instrumental in helping me grow both professionally and personally.

Who is your role model?

My role models are my criminology lecturers, Professor Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Professor Harriet Klopper. I greatly admire their expertise and passion for the subject. Their teaching style inspires me to strive for excellence and encourages my curiosity. Being their student has been an incredible experience because I deeply respect their dedication and wealth of knowledge. They truly set the standard for what it means to be both a scholar and a mentor.

How do you handle feedback?

I handle feedback very well. I appreciate and prefer honest critique over sugar-coated comments because it helps me identify areas where I can improve. Constructive feedback is essential for personal and professional growth, and I use it as an opportunity to learn and enhance my skills. I believe it plays a key role in helping me reach my full potential.

What types of clothes have you modeled before?

I have had the opportunity to model for Wilma du Plessis Couture, Little Birdie, Johan Botha, Denè Odendaal Couture, Lizan Zonhdagh Couture, Silver Swallow Design, and Lizel Nortje. These experiences have allowed me to work with everything from elegant evening wear to unique and creative couture pieces. Each collaboration has been a chance to showcase different styles and aesthetics, and I've enjoyed bringing each designer's vision to life.

Tell me about a challenge you faced when modeling.

While I've been fortunate not to have had any major bad experiences in modeling, there have been minor challenges along the way. I struggled to place in the top three at first, but through hard work and determination, I eventually achieved it. My perseverance helped me overcome this challenge and reach my goals.

How well do you communicate with others?

I communicate very well with others and am a strong advocate for healthy communication. I believe it is the key to successful relationships, whether with friends, family, or colleagues. Clear and open communication helps foster trust and understanding, and it's essential for achieving goals and maintaining positive interactions. I'm committed to practicing active listening and ensuring that I'm clear and respectful in my own communication.

What's the longest photo shoot you've ever done?

The longest photo shoot I've ever done was for Die Bruidgids. I arrived at 8 a.m. for makeup and hair, and the shoot wrapped up around 5 p.m. Even though it was a full day, I didn't mind at all because it remains one of my favorite shoots to this day. The team was fantastic, and the creative energy throughout the shoot made the experience incredibly enjoyable and rewarding.
